The Collier County Sheriff's Office (OSCC), Florida, announced this Thursday the arrest of the suspect linked to the shooting that seriously injured Cuban opposition leader Manuel Milanés, who was identified as Hilberto Callejas.

After the shooting occurred near 60th Avenue Northeast and Everglades Boulevard, in Ave Maria, close to the county line with Hendry County, around 8:53 AM, sheriff's deputies participated in the search for the suspect, Naples Daily News reported.

Michelle Batten, spokesperson for the OSCC, stated that the alleged shooter fled on foot in the area of 60th Avenue Northeast and Everglades Boulevard.

It was also reported that trained dogs and the aviation unit were used in the search for the suspect of the shooting.

Later, the OSCC identified the alleged aggressor as Hilberto Callejas, 26 years old, and stated that during the events, the aggressor rammed the victim's car related to a domestic violence incident, reported Fox4.

Sheriff Kevin Rambosk noted that Callejas then got out of his car and shot at the victim's window, breaking the glass, and that there was a child inside the vehicle.

According to the police report, a witness confronted Callejas before he aimed the gun at him and shot him in the shoulder, Fox4 reported.

Neither of the two cited news portals specifies whether the Cuban opposition figure Manuel Milanés was inside the car that was rammed and shot at with the child inside, or if he was the witness injured in the shoulder.

According to Naples Daily News, the shooting sparked false rumors of another incident at a school, leading to the closure of the school in Collier County this Thursday.

Jennifer Kupiec, spokesperson for the Collier County Public Schools, reported that the police activity near Estate Elementary School led the institution to enter "secure campus" mode, commonly known as lockdown.

However, he noted that despite the police activity, the school day continued as scheduled.

Kupiec stated that the incident did not pose a threat to the school, and that no students or staff members were injured, adding that the school was closed shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
