More than 11,000 Cuban citizens have requested asylum in Mexico during 2024, according to data released this Tuesday by the Commission for Refugee Assistance of the northern country (COMAR).
On the social network X, the COMAR revealed the figures, and those born on the island represent the second largest group, with 11,052 applicants, only surpassed by Hondurans (21,529).
The number is on the rise, as between January and July, 9,914 Cubans in irregular situations sought protection from local authorities on their journey to the United States.
The COMAR did not provide data on the number of resolved cases, nor on those that received a positive response.
A total of 15,645 Cubans entered the U.S. during the month of July, according to the latest data released by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Of that total, 10,509 entered through the border with Mexico.
This figure represents a slight decrease compared to June, when 17,563 entered the country, marking the lowest entry recorded in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2024 (since October 1), which at that time totaled 131,612, a pace that must surpass the 142,352 of 2023.
According to the latest figures released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), during the year 2023, more than 300,000 Cubans applied for asylum in different parts of the world.
The data showed a significant increase compared to previous years and reveals an upward trend in the migration flow of those born on the island, reported the independent media ElTOQUE.
