A survey conducted by CNN after the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump yielded strong results supporting a victory for the current vice president.
Former President Trump and Democratic candidate Harris had their first presidential debate with ABC in Philadelphia this Tuesday. Among the agenda topics were immigration, abortion, the economy in the United States, and the military conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
Sixty-three percent of registered voters who watched the debate considered Harris superior to Trump, while 37% thought otherwise.
The survey included 605 people nationwide and shows a significant change compared to the expectations prior to the debate, when voters were evenly divided at 50% on which candidate would perform better.
The results also reflect that 96% of Harris's supporters believed she did a better job, while among Trump supporters, 69% awarded victory to the former president.
This survey, conducted by SSRS for CNN, makes it clear that the results do not represent all voters in the country, but only those who tuned into the debate.
The debate also positively impacted the perception of Harris as a presidential candidate. Before the confrontation, only 39% of respondents had a favorable opinion of her. However, after the debate, that number increased to 45%.
On the other hand, the opinion of Trump remained virtually unchanged, with 39% in favor and 51% unfavorable opinions.
Despite the good results for Harris, the majority of viewers (82%) stated that the debate would not influence their voting decision. Only 4% indicated that the event made them change their minds about whom to support.
In addition to CNN's data, there are other polls and opinions from political analysts that also attribute the victory to Harris.
The company PredictIt indicated that the vice president surpassed Donald Trump by ten points after the presidential debate.
The polling company Trafalgar indicated that 55.3% of voters in key states considered Harris the winner, while 42.5% supported Trump.
A focus group from The Washington Post also showed that 23 out of 25 participants saw Harris as the winner.
Analysts like Chris Wallace and Ian Bremmer agreed that Harris performed better, while the conservative Frank Luntz admitted that "Trump had a bad night."
The first presidential debate of this campaign took place in June, between President Joe Biden and candidate Trump. It was a historic event that will be remembered for the lapses of the Democrat and the firmness and self-confidence shown by the Republican.
Few days after the event, Biden withdrew from the fight for his second term and proposed his vice president.
Kamala Harris emerged strengthened from the debate on September 10, improving her image among voters who saw her in action and consolidating her position against Donald Trump in the race for the White House.
Most voters seem firm in their decisions, but the impact of the debate could be crucial for those who are still undecided.
