Two cars and an ambulance were involved in a triple collision at noon on Wednesday at the roundabout of the Ciudad Deportiva in Havana.
In the photographs shared on Facebook by a witness, a modern white car - from the Chinese manufacturer BAW - can be seen colliding with another red car, which in turn hit the ambulance, presumably for not keeping the proper distance while navigating the busy capital roundabout.
No injuries were reported in the accident. However, as a result of the collision, both cars sustained damage, primarily the red one, both in the hood and the front bumper as well as in the rear. It is unknown if the ambulance experienced any kind of malfunction.
According to the comments, the two cars belong to state entities, and one of them belongs to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), given the presence of several officers at the scene of the incident.
The accident unleashed dozens of opinions in the publication, which coincided that the drivers of the cars did not maintain the required distance between vehicles, which would have allowed them to brake in time without hitting the one in front.
Other people pointed to the lack of signage in the area, although those who frequently travel on the avenues that converge at the roundabout stated that there was signage and attributed the accidents in the area to the recklessness of the drivers.
"They put a traffic light at that roundabout, it was a few years ago, it lasted a few days, the traffic jam was catastrophic, it doesn't work, but they need to do something and drivers should take precautions and keep their distance above all," said an internet user.
"Yes, there is signage, let's not downplay the recklessness of the drivers, as many times we find ourselves in a hurry," stated another. "They don't want to keep their distance, and there are the results," pointed out a young woman.
"That roundabout is very dangerous because everyone is in a hurry; they should do something to prevent accidents. Maybe now that there was a MININT car and an ambulance, they will take action on the matter. I hope we don't have to mourn any loss of life, which is the most important thing," expressed another woman.
“There is no accident there, that is negligence,” stated another person, while a gentleman expressed: “What I see is a collision due to lack of distance; otherwise, there would have been time to maneuver and brake, but here no one keeps their distance, they don’t teach that in traffic schools.”
Official statistics recorded a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) in Cuba during the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2023. However, incidents on the country's roads and streets do not stop, and the frequency with which they occur and their fatal consequences are concerning.
