The driver of a motorcycle collided with the windshield of a car in an accident that occurred this Friday in Havana when, according to reports on social media, the car invaded the opposite lane.
"Accident that just happened right in front of the Polyclinic 5 de Septiembre, in Santa Fe, Playa. I don’t know anything else about what happened," reported a Facebook user in the group 'Accidentes Buses & Camiones'.
Images shared by the user revealed that the collision between both vehicles was head-on. On the windshield of the car—a French-made Renault utility vehicle with license plate B 228 797—there was a visible hole caused by the impact from the motorist.
According to what an internet user reported, the incident apparently occurred when the driver of the car crossed into the opposite lane, seemingly after falling asleep.
"Tragic accident. According to witnesses, the driver of the Renault car fell asleep and crossed into the lane, colliding with the motorcycle. I hope we don't have to mourn the life of the motorist and that he recovers soon," said the user identified on Facebook as Alejandro Hernández.
Motorcycle accidents remain among the leading causes of fatalities for Cuban drivers. In August 2023, it was reported that the number of deaths from traffic accidents in Cuba had increased compared to the previous year, and that motorcycles accounted for half of the deaths and accidents in the country.
At the beginning of September, a motorcyclist lost his life in an accident that occurred in Guanabo. His companion, a 25-year-old woman, had to be taken to the hospital. Apparently, the young people were returning from activities related to the "end of summer in Varadero," and the motorcyclist lived in Miami, although he was originally from Santa Marta, in Varadero, Matanzas.
In early July, two young Cubans riding a motorcycle died in Cárdenas, Matanzas, after crashing into a tree near the roundabout that surrounds the city's cemetery. The young people were identified as Tomás Horta León and Amanda Hernández, a couple who left behind a small child.
Around the same time, a young Cuban affectionately nicknamed "Chichu" died in a tragic motorcycle accident in the province of Pinar del Río, an event that left a deep mark in Arroyo de Agua, the community where he lived in the municipality of Consolación del Sur.
In June, a couple of Cubans died in a tragic traffic accident between a motorcycle and a riquimbili that occurred in the town of Redención, in the municipality of Minas, Camagüey.
