A 52-year-old Cuban citizen was arrested in the city of Genoa, Italy, after being linked to a gang of thieves operating in the Riviera.
The Cuban, whose identity has not been revealed, was part of a group along with two people of Peruvian origin, all residing in Milan, who were caught by the local police in the act of committing a crime.
The operation that led to his capture began on September 21, when the group stole a backpack from a store in downtown Genoa, according to the local media Notizie.it.
Authorities were able to identify their vehicle through the license plate surveillance system, which allowed them to track them down and discover their involvement in several robberies.
During a surveillance operation in the popular area of Boccadasse, the agents arrested the Cuban and his accomplices just after one of them stole the bag of a British tourist in an outdoor pizzeria.
The Cuban, who acted as a driver and coordinated communication between the group members via WhatsApp, was arrested while trying to escape the scene. Although he does not have as extensive a criminal record as his companions, Italian authorities have identified him as a key part of the logistics of the thefts.
After his arrest, the judge in charge of the case validated the Cuban's arrest and imposed a ban on him residing in Genoa and its province. Meanwhile, the other two members of the gang have been imprisoned to serve long sentences for previous offenses.
This case is another example of the involvement of Cuban citizens in criminal acts in that European country. A few days ago, three others were arrested in the town of Tivoli, in the province of Rome, Italy, accused of violently snatching a woman's purse on the street.
The events date back to September 20, when the Carabinieri from the Castel Madama police station, in the aforementioned Roman locality, arrested three Cuban citizens aged 25, 48, and 25, accused of assaulting a woman while she was waiting for her son to come out of school.
Additionally, the Local Police of Trieste arrested a Cuban citizen and filed a complaint against him for electricity theft in that city in northeastern Italy.
The man, identified only by the initials B.B.J.L., 29 years old, contacted the Environmental Police Unit at the end of August, requesting assistance because he could not continue taking care of his neighbor's two dogs from the adjacent apartment, who had been absent for some time, the authorities stated in a statement.
The Italian carabinieri also arrested a 22-year-old Cuban who converted the basement of his house in Rome into a clandestine laboratory, where he manufactured an arsenal of weapons and ammunition, the authorities reported in a statement.
The Cuban, identified as Edgar Molina, had numerous weapons in the basement of his home, including a dangerous completely homemade submachine gun, a repainted gun with a partially worn serial number, another dog repellent gun, and one shaped like a pen, also constructed by himself.
