The driver of a car lost control of the vehicle and ended up going off the road and falling into the spillway of a dam in Havana, resulting in the death of two people in the accident.
Reports on social media accounted for the tragic incident that occurred early Wednesday morning. At the time of writing this note, neither the authorities in Havana nor the official media in the capital have reported on the unfortunate accident.
"Early in the morning, at the spillway of the La Guayaba dam. Regrettable losses," indicated the user identified as Nelson Álvarez in the Facebook group 'Accidentes Automovilísticos en Cuba'.
Images shared by the author of the post revealed the condition of the vehicle after it went off the road and fell from a bridge, for reasons that are unknown. The photographs show firefighters from the rescue teams at the scene, as well as the body of one of the apparently deceased individuals.
A Facebook user identified as Yasmany Montero reported that he was at the scene as the "company chief" of the rescuers.
"It is regrettable what happened, and yes, there are two deceased in the section of the first ring. The vehicle fell into the spillway of the La Palma dam. Upon our arrival, both victims were deceased," Montero clarified in the comments, correcting the author of the post, who had placed the accident at the La Guayaba dam.
"It's not the Guayaba dam, it's the La Palma dam, along the first ring road. I passed by there at 6:30 and there were criminalistics cars and traffic patrols," confirmed the user identified as José Luis Correderas.
Another user identified as Yunia García Laurencio confirmed in the comments the alleged identity of the victims. "So much pain! Mello and my uncle Eglis are gone. Our whole family is devastated. So much pain!" said García Laurencio.
The poor condition of the pavement, as well as the lack of signs and lighting, makes level crossings and bridges on Cuban roads prone to accidents for drivers.
In August, a truck fell off a bridge while traveling on a road towards Berroa, in Havana. Fortunately, its occupants emerged unharmed from the accident, according to witnesses.
In May, a car known as “almendrones” in Cuba fell over the divider of a bridge, at kilometer 69 of the National Highway, in the town of Nueva Paz. One person sustained serious injuries.
Seven people were injured, three of them seriously, following an accident on the Masó-Las Mercedes road in Granma, where a truck fell from a bridge last February.
