Cuban singer and songwriter Marta Valdés dies at 90 years old.

Marta Valdés was a renowned singer-songwriter, troubadour, and music critic. Among her most remembered works are "Palabras" and "Tú no sospechas."

The Cuban singer and songwriter Marta Valdés passed away this Thursday in Havana at the age of 90.

The news was announced by the Ministry of Culture, which recognized the career of the prestigious performer, troubadour, and music critic.

"Her exquisite artistic sensitivity, her poetic word, and her great musical talent made her a prominent figure of the second generation of filin, a bridge between the founding masters of the genre and the singer-songwriters of the Nueva Trova Movement, who respected and acknowledged her as an essential reference," the note states.

Born in Havana in 1934, she began her professional career in music in 1955 with the composition of the bolero "Palabras," a song that identified her throughout her life.

Other songs of his that were well-loved include No es preciso, En la imaginación, Canción simple, Deja que siga sola, and Tú no sospechas, which were popularized by artists such as Elena Burke, Bola de Nieve, Cheo Feliciano, Omara Portuondo, and Pablo Milanés.

Recognized artists have expressed their sorrow at his/her passing.

"Our Marta Valdés has passed away. An extraordinary musical author and a clear defender of our culture. Those of us who had the privilege of her friendship will never forget the treasure of her songs, her intellectual honesty, and her greatness as a human being. Glory to her work and peace to her soul," wrote pianist and composer José María Vitier.

"Marta Valdés has just passed away. I am deeply saddened! Teacher, beacon, mentor, loyal friend, wonderful human being, cultured, friendly, immense composer. Cuban culture is in mourning," expressed the troubadour and singer-songwriter Heidi Igualada.

"Thank you, Marta Valdés: for my favorite song, for inviting me to sing, for opening your home to us, for loving my son and sharing so many things with him that only you two understood; for teaching me the work of Teresita Fernández, for gifting us beautiful words, for everything you leave to Cuban culture and the world," affirmed the singer Rochy Ameneiro.

Throughout her life, Marta Valdés received numerous recognitions, such as the National Music Award (2007).

By family decision, his/her body will be cremated.
