The former Cuban Minister of Culture, Abel Prieto Jiménez, current president of Casa de Las Américas, shared a message of goodwill for the recovery of reggaeton artist El Taiger, who is fighting for his life in a Miami hospital after being shot in the head on Thursday, October 3rd.
"All Cubans wish for his recovery," highlighted Prieto Jiménez on X, in a post where he shared an information note from the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM).
The Cuban official also emphasized that El Taiger "has not renounced his nationality or his love for Cuba."
In 2019, the controversial reggaeton artist shared a photo on his Facebook profile in which he appears posing next to Abel Prieto.
In the image, you can see the Cuban politician and writer with his hand on El Taiger's shoulder, while both smile at the camera.
Immediately, the snapshot sparked criticism among the reggaeton artist's followers, who did not hesitate to label him as "communist," prompting El Taiger to come out and explain the reasons for taking the photo.
At that moment, El Taiger assured Alexander Otaola, to whose program he was invited, that it was all just pure coincidence.
He was working on a book project with a Canadian writer when they both walked by the UNEAC (Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). Outside the institution was Abel Prieto talking to a group of young people, one of whom recognized him and the former minister turned around. At that moment, the writer asked him to pose for a portrait next to the former minister for her book.
In recent days, there have been various reactions from Cuban officialist officials regarding the state of health of the reggaeton artist, who is in stable condition but still poses concerns for his life at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
From the government-affiliated newspaper Trabajadores, a text signed by its director Joel García León states that El Taiger was a victim of "a violent society like the American one," although it emphasizes that the life of a human being is above any social judgment or musical preferences.
For its part, the ICM waited more than 48 hours to classify what happened as a "regrettable event."
They also state that together with the Musicalia Agency from Artex, they have provided "permanent monitoring of the artist's health, which remains critical, with a guarded prognosis."
"In the coming days, we will continue to provide information through this channel on such a sensitive topic. We wish for the speedy recovery of this young musician, who has not given up his nationality nor his love for Cuba," they concluded.
Also joining was the wife of the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel and official of the Ministry of Culture, Lis Cuesta Pedraza, who wrote: “Simultaneously, in several cities in Cuba and in Miami, there are people holding vigils for the life of El Taiger, a very popular urban artist both there and here, who was a victim of a violent crime in South Florida.”
The investigation into the incident in which the Cuban reggaeton artist was shot in the head is ongoing. Meanwhile, hundreds of Cubans gathered over the weekend in prayer chains for El Taiger's recovery, carrying white candles and listening to his music.
