The presenter and popular Cuban communicator in Miami, Enrique Santos, dedicated a radio program to the preparations to face Hurricane Milton, a category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, in Florida.
Santos interviewed Rose Angelakopoulos, a police officer from Tampa, the area where the hurricane is expected to make landfall. The statements made by this law enforcement professional were particularly revealing for the residents in Florida.
"To those who do not evacuate voluntarily, I recommend that you take a photo of yourself, that you take a photo of your clothing to be able to identify you when the storm passes, which will be deadly," said Angelakopoulos.
"Take a permanent marker and write your name and date of birth on your arm; this will make it easier for us to identify during rescues and when recovering bodies," added the police.
Her words put even Santos on alert, although he did not try to dissuade her, but rather emphasized the dangers that this major hurricane represents for the residents of the area it will pass through.
He recalled that Hurricane Helene left over 200 dead and more than 100 missing persons in Florida and was of a lower category, less powerful than Milton.
There are certain moments during the passage of the hurricane when firefighters and rescuers cannot go out to search for people because it puts the operations and their own lives at risk.
Angelakopoulos insisted that those who refuse to evacuate in the face of the powerful hurricane Milton, and do not take seriously the warnings to protect their lives, are putting themselves and their loved ones in danger.
This Tuesday, the mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, sent a very tough and clear message to the residents of the city given the proximity and dangers posed by the powerful hurricane Milton.
"Helene was a wake-up call. (...) Milton is literally catastrophic. I can say without dramatizing at all that if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you are going to die," he expressed.
President Joe Biden also echoed this evacuation request to residents in Florida.
"I urge everyone in the path of Hurricane Milton to listen to local authorities and follow safety measures. If you are under evacuation orders, you must evacuate right now. You should have evacuated already. It is a matter of life or death, and this is not an exaggeration," he emphasized from the White House.
The evacuation for this hurricane has been the largest in several decades in Florida. Some roads have heavy traffic jams. Many families waited until the last day to make the decision to leave their cities, and now they are vulnerable on the highways as the storm approaches.
