A young man of only 28 years old died on the morning of this Tuesday in the town of Olleta, in Navarra, in a tragic workplace accident while working on a telephone pole.

The victim, identified as Yoandry Alonso Peña, fell from a height of eight meters, which caused his death at the scene of the accident, despite the efforts of emergency services, according to local press reports.

The accident occurred at 11:31 in the morning, when the SOS Navarra 112 emergency management center mobilized the firefighters from the Tafalla park, a medicalized ambulance, a helicopter, and patrols from the regional police.

However, the medical services could do nothing to save the young man's life. The Judicial Brigade of the Navarra Regional Police is investigating the exact causes of the accident.

A worker very well liked by his colleagues.

Yoandry Alonso Peña had been living in Pamplona for about two years, where he resided in the Buztintxuri neighborhood with his wife.

The young man had arrived in Spain in search of a new life, and his closest family remained on the island.

With previous experience in the construction sector in Havana, Yoandry was currently working as a maintenance technician for the company Netzero, dedicated to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

His colleagues remember him as a "very hardworking and cheerful" person, highlighting that "he was always attentive to his coworkers."

In addition to his dedication at work, he was a football enthusiast and a supporter of Real Madrid, according to those who shared workdays with him.

One of his greatest wishes was for his family to be able to reunite with him in Spain.

An accident under investigation

The young man, who was dismantling copper telephone lines at the time of the accident, had previously worked in fiber optic installations and cabling in rural areas.

His tragic passing has left his coworkers and neighbors in shock, who have expressed their sadness over the loss of a person they describe as dedicated to their work and always having a positive attitude.

Between January and June 2024, there were 22 more fatal workplace accidents recorded in Spain than in the same period of 2023, an increase of 7.9%, according to provisional data published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

The 299 deaths due to work-related causes recorded in the first half of the year in Spain was the second worst figure in the Iberian nation since 2020, only surpassed by the 320 fatal work accidents that occurred in 2022.
