A young Cuban woman identified as Karla Prieto and mother of at least three children died on Wednesday in the United States after her husband shot her with a firearm.
The victim's mother, Caridad Arocha, confirmed that the incident occurred on the same day as her daughter's birthday, this October 23: "Today my daughter Karla is celebrating her birthday but today her husband killed her, he shot her and she is dead," the woman said on Facebook.
He added that the young woman leaves several children, without specifying how many. On her Facebook profile, a boy and two twin girls of about two years old are shown.
"My beautiful cousin, today that was supposed to be a day of joy, we say goodbye to you; and may that God who exists keep you in glory and make that unfortunate one who ended your life pay for it. I and your family bid you farewell with much pain on the very day of your birthday," published a relative of Prieto.
Early in the morning, Arocha had left a message on social media congratulating his daughter, wishing her a happy birthday and expressing pride in the young woman.
Dozens of people have commented on social media posts about the tragic event, including actress Tahimí Alvariño, who is close to the family.
"Cachita, I am so sorry!! I can't stop thinking about you, I hug you from a distance and I wish you a lot of strength to face this very difficult test," she wrote.
The official Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) admitted that more than 16,000 women and girls, from 9,579 families, live in situations of violence in the country. However, amidst the Cuban migration crisis, it is difficult to quantify how many women from the island experience these situations when they emigrate.
Last August, a 32-year-old Cuban woman identified as Indira Almaguer was murdered by stabbing in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, by her ex-partner, Marcelino Fonseca, who is also of Cuban nationality.
Also in April, Yessenia Rodríguez Márquez, a Cuban who had only been in the U.S. for nine months, was killed by her boyfriend, identified as Alexander Roque.
