The Cuban Kadel Piedrahita, found guilty by a court in Florida for the murder of a cyclist in 2019, was sentenced by a judge in Miami-Dade to life in prison.

Piedrahita, found guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm for the events that occurred on August 14, 2019, at the Key Biscayne bridge, also received an additional sentence of five years for the charge of armed assault, reports AmericaTeVé.

After a violent argument that day, Piedrahita, who was riding his motorcycle, shot and killed the cyclist Alexis Palencia, 48, originally from Guantánamo and a father of two. He also shot another cyclist, César Sosa.

According to Local 10, during the sentencing, no one spoke in favor of the accused and none of his family members attended the trial. His public defender noted that the incident had also cost the life of his own family.

Piedrahita used to accompany the group of cyclists -known as the "Don Pan" group- of which his 17-year-old son was a part.

In September, he was found guilty of this incident in a trial where he claimed that he acted in self-defense against attacks from Alexis Palencia and César Sosa, and that he handed a weapon to Palencia.

His defense added that he fired after being attacked by the victim and two other cyclists, Soza and Londono, who were witnesses in the case, and insisted that Palencia had a weapon at the time of the incident.
