At least one woman died and several others were injured after a private van, apparently used for passenger transport, ran off the road and overturned in Camagüey for reasons that are still unclear.
The accident occurred near the town of La Rosalía, on the beach road, Nuevitas-Camagüey, according to a witness who shared a couple of photos taken from inside another vehicle in the group "Accidentes Automovilísticos en Cuba," which made it difficult to ascertain many details about the scene of the incident.
In the comments section of the post, witnesses identified the deceased victim as "Baby," a woman who, despite being hospitalized, could not overcome the severity of her injuries.
"Sadly, in that van was my coworker and friend, who is in critical condition with multiple head injuries," reported an internet user, who soon learned that his friend had passed away.
There is only limited information about the accident, and the exact number of injured individuals is unclear; however, some internet users reported that there were at least four severe injuries.
As of the closing of this note, there are no other details available.
Accidents have been relentless on Cuban roads throughout the year.
In another recent incident, two teenagers were seriously injured in the early hours of October 27 in Havana when they were struck from behind by a Kia Picanto while riding on their motorcycle. The driver fled the scene after dragging them for several meters.
In this case, the accident occurred on Boyeros Avenue, near the Río Cristal recreation center. The family of one of the injured parties has requested assistance in identifying the driver who fled the scene.
Although the population has noticed an increase in traffic accidents in recent months, Cuban authorities stated at the beginning of July that during the first half of 2024, the country recorded 543 fewer incidents than in the same period the previous year.
On the official television program Mesa Redonda, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Body of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also reported that there were 81 fewer fatalities (23%) and a reduction of 151 injuries (5%) between January and June of this year, compared to the same period in 2023.
