Manuel Milanés recounts how he was shot in front of his house in Florida and shows the scar from the attack.

"I found myself between life and death," summarized Milanés.

The prominent Cuban activist and influencer Manuel Milanés recounted how he was shot in front of his home in Florida while defending a woman and her children from an assailant, and he displayed the scar from the attack, from which he is still recovering.

The incident occurred on August 23rd. Milanés heard cries for help outside his home in Collier County, and when he went outside, he encountered an armed man who was repeatedly crashing his vehicle into the car where a woman and four children were seeking assistance, according to the police report.

In an interview with the YouTube program Destino Tolk, Milanés recounted that the man "was inside (the vehicle attacking the woman) and I began to struggle with him when he shot me. I fell to the ground; luckily, my head fell on the gravel," he noted.

He then showed the enormous scar that covers almost his entire chest, his armpit, and part of his back. He explained that it is a wound with over 100 stitches.

They had to place a stent to repair the arteries affected by the gunshot and stop the bleeding, while the doctors also had to create an access point in his back to drain the blood accumulated in a lung.

"I found myself between life and death," he summarized.

A few days ago, Milanés was recognized in the United States Congress Registry for his bravery after saving a mother and her four children from a violent attack.

Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart presented this distinction and highlighted the courage and selfless actions of the Cuban activist in this incident that nearly cost him his life.

In addition to the recognition from Congress, Milanés recently received the Sheriff’s Appreciation Award from the Collier County Sheriff's Office in South Florida. Sheriff Kevin J. Rambosk expressed his gratitude for the courage of the Cuban dissident and emphasized that his actions were a testament to heroism and selflessness.

The attacker, identified as Hilberto Callejas, 26, faces multiple charges for his violent behavior, including aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, and child abuse, among others.
