Cuban opposition figure Manuel Milanés, who was the victim of an armed attack on August 22, reappeared on his social media with a message that fills his followers with relief and optimism.

"Thanks to God and your prayers, I am in serious danger of being better off than before the shot. I will be able to take America sailing, who knows how far," expressed Milanés, with his characteristic sense of humor, after several days of recovery.

This message, filled with strength and hope, comes after an event that shocked the Cuban opposition community both inside and outside the island.

The incident occurred in front of his house in Ave María, Florida, when an unknown assailant opened fire on the activist, seriously wounding him.

From the very beginning, followers and comrades in the struggle expressed concerns about his health, although the quick medical response allowed him to be stabilized.

The attack shook the opposition community.

The attack on Milanés was initially received as an attempt to silence one of the most critical voices against the Cuban regime. Within a few hours of the incident, police authorities reported that they had taken a suspect into custody, although they did not close the investigations to clarify the motives of the crime.

The attack was not a political assassination but the result of a domestic violence incident in which the Cuban opposition figure intervened to protect a neighbor with children who was being assaulted in the street by an individual identified as Hilberto Callejas.

Callejas rammed his car into the woman's vehicle and then broke the car window with a firearm. Milanés came to the family's defense, confronting Callejas, who shot him in the shoulder before fleeing.

Milanés's first statements after the attack.

On August 26, Milanés publicly shared his first statements following the shooting. He thanked everyone who prayed for his health and offered him their support during such difficult times.

"I am recovering, thank you all for your messages of love and strength," he commented in a brief video that quickly went viral among his followers.

He has maintained a positive attitude, and his message on social media has been interpreted as a sign that he will continue with his activism and fight for the freedom of Cuba.

Detention of the alleged culprit

Authorities confirmed that the suspect in the attack was arrested on the same day of the incident, although not all details of the investigation have been disclosed yet.

The opposition community continues to demand justice for Milanés, while the legal process advances and the activist recovers favorably.
