The Cuban influencer and opposition figure Manuel Milanés, who was shot last Thursday in front of his house in Collier County, Florida, is no longer in danger.
Milanés was shot in the chest by a man who was mistreating his wife and children and who did not hesitate to assault him as well when he went to defend the family.
According to sources close to América TeVe, the economist and businessman is hospitalized in Fort Myers, where he underwent surgery on his left subclavian artery. The surgery was successful and he has been removed from intubation, and now the doctors are evaluating the possibility of a second surgical intervention on his shoulder.
He, for his part, is stable and in good spirits, to the point that he has already video chatted with his family.
The shooter, a 26-year-old man identified as Hilberto Callejas, remains in custody.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk confirmed that what occurred was a serious incident of domestic violence that escalated to tragic levels when Callejas shot a witness, (Milanés), who tried to intervene.
The incident occurred in the community of Ave Maria, where the individual fired two shots at the car in which his family was, in front of the Cuban's house. The man called the police and then went outside in his pajamas to defend the woman and his children who were being attacked.
Cuban politicians and opposers inside and outside of Cuba have wished Milanés a speedy recovery.
The Republican congressman Mario Díaz-Balart called him a true American patriot who acted bravely as a good Samaritan to save the lives of other families.
Guillermo 'Coco' Fariñas and the Damas de Blanco also worry about their health.
Hilberto Callejas faces charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated assault, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and child abuse, among others.
