The Cuban police arrested the main suspect in the murder of two people during a violent brawl that took place on Saturday, October 26, in Cienfuegos.
The victims have been identified as 31-year-old Ricardo Vladimir Fortes and 17-year-old Raúl Antonio Artiz Suárez del Villar, who died from injuries caused by a knife.
The Facebook profile Las Cosas de Fernanda, associated with the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), revealed that both were involved in a senseless altercation that escalated into a riot in a place known as La Plaza, in the city of Cienfuegos. They were taken to the hospital, but the doctors could do nothing for them.
"They were not machete wounds, as speculated, nor are there other young people in serious condition. The injuries were caused by cutting instruments used by the murderer, who had concealed them in the bag of one of the girls accompanying him. This clever tactic is now employed by certain criminals to prevent the police from detecting these deadly weapons. Knowing that authorities are limited in their searches involving the girls, they use this ruse," the report detailed.
"All those involved, including the murderer, have been captured and investigations are ongoing," he emphasized.
The author of the post noted that he does not know the cause of the fight, but mentioned that there was "a high level of alcohol, acting as an intoxicant."
Days ago, friends of the young Raúl Artiz reported that he lost his life while trying to defend a friend.
At the beginning of the month, the Cuban government claimed that crime is decreasing on the Island, but acknowledged that the population does not notice it. This perception is accompanied by daily reports on the internet about violent incidents in the country.
Data presented by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) to Prime Minister Manuel Marrero during a meeting of the Working Group for the prevention and combating of crimes and illegalities indicated that although the crime rate remained high at the end of August, incidents decreased compared to the same period the previous year.
"Although progress is being made in some areas and indicators, the people still do not see the results (...) some trends indicate that the efforts are beginning to yield results, but this will become evident when the people can perceive it," said Marrero Cruz.
Despite this acknowledgment, a few days ago, the vice president of the Supreme Court, Maricela Sosa Ravelo, stated that insecurity on the Island is a problem exacerbated by social media and accused defamatory campaigns promoted from the United States.
