The Cuban Aviation Corporation S.A. announced the resumption of air operations and services at Havana Airport, as well as in Varadero, Cienfuegos, and Villa Clara, starting at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
This measure marks the end of the temporary suspension that affected air connectivity in the western region of the country following Hurricane Rafael.
The initial suspension of flights to Cuba, implemented to protect both passengers and airport infrastructure, was extended from Tuesday until noon on Thursday.
This situation particularly affected the international airports of Gerona, Cayo Largo, Havana, Varadero, Santa Clara, and Cienfuegos, as reported in previous days.
During the emergency, the authorities coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of travelers and workers in the Cuban aviation sector.
Passengers with flights scheduled during the interruption period should contact the travel agency or airline where they purchased their tickets directly to reschedule their trips and minimize the impact this weather phenomenon has had on their travel plans.
The Cuban government assures that airlines are adjusting their operations to accommodate all the passengers who have been affected.
This reopening of Cuban airports comes with a call to exercise caution and follow the instructions of the authorities, especially in light of potential changes to flight schedules due to the reorganization of operations.
The suspension of flights was a direct response to Hurricane Rafael, which affected the western part of Cuba with heavy rains, dangerous winds, and elevated waves, reaching Category 3 strength.
The cyclone is already moving away from the island's territorial waters, and the country should begin to return to normalcy in the coming days.
