Cuba's Oriente region on alert: Over 3,600 seismic aftershocks, 97 felt

More than 3,600 aftershocks have been recorded in eastern Cuba following the earthquakes on November 10, resulting in injuries and damaging over 3,752 buildings in Granma province.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) reported this Saturday that more than 3,600 aftershocks have been recorded following the earthquakes that occurred last Sunday, November 10, southeast of the municipality of Pilón in Granma province.

"Since the 6 and 6.7 magnitude earthquake on 10/11/24, a total of 3,648 aftershocks have been recorded, with 97 presumably perceptible," reported CENAIS in its bulletin this Saturday.

According to the report, the most significant movement was recorded at 1:29 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.9 in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, in the Pilón-Chivirico area, there have been 478 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 0.5 to 3.3.

So far, Cuban authorities have reported ten individuals injured and at least 3,752 buildings damaged due to these natural events.

According to statements made during a session of the National Defense Council, featuring the participation of leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, the injured and the majority of the affected buildings are concentrated in the province of Granma.

Luis Rojas Yero, technical deputy director of the Provincial Housing Directorate in Granma, informed the newspaper La Demajagua that 513 partial collapses have been recorded, of which 54 are total collapses, 38 are complete roof failures, and 313 are partial roof collapses.

He indicated that the municipality of Pilón has the highest number of affected houses, totaling 830, followed by Campechuela with 759, Bartolomé Masó with 663, Buey Arriba with 445, Media Luna with 337, and Manzanillo with 248 damaged homes. In other areas, the number of affected properties is lower.

"According to architects and specialists, studies are being conducted in coastal areas to assess the feasibility of soils for housing construction and the level of risk when events like those on November 10 occur," the news portal reported.
