An elderly man passed away this Monday at the entrance of building T-27, located in the Reparto Micro 8 of the José Martí District in Santiago de Cuba, without authorities immediately arriving at the scene to handle the body.
Witnesses claim that the man had been dead for several hours before the incident was reported, and although local authorities were notified, they did not respond immediately to the scene, reported journalist Yosmany Mayeta on his Facebook profile.
“This man died a few hours ago from cold and hunger, and no one came to his aid. According to the neighbors, he was a homeless person,” wrote the communicator, quoting some residents of the area.
The case has sparked outrage among the neighbors, who are denouncing the delay in the authorities' response and the lack of attention to vulnerable individuals in the community.
In a later post, Mayeta reported that nearly three hours later, the authorities still had not come to inquire about the case, nor had the body been recovered.
"Night falls and the body of the elderly homeless man who passed away at the entrance of the T-27 apartment building in the Micro 8 neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba has still not been removed," he noted.
Social media frequently sees reports about the slow response of the Cuban regime in collecting the bodies of deceased individuals, whether at their homes or in public spaces.
In June, a man living alone in Santiago de Cuba passed away, and his body remained at the residence for nearly 24 hours before the authorities arrived to collect it.
The residents of Diego Velázquez Street reported the situation on social media. The case has sparked outrage among the local community.
Residents of the Marianao municipality reported in 2023 that a man died on a street in that Havana neighborhood, and the authorities did not arrive to remove the body.
Although official sources tried to deny the information by stating that "the police arrived at the scene immediately," local residents confirmed that the body had been on the sidewalk since six in the morning, and they themselves decided to cover it with a sheet so that the children heading to school would not see it.
