A disappearance case that remained unresolved for a decade finally found an answer thanks to the efforts of Sunshine State Sonar, a company known for its expertise in solving missing person's cases in South Florida.
The company managed to locate a 2003 Honda Odyssey van in a lake in Melbourne, Florida, which allowed a forensic team to identify the remains of Katia Belaya inside. She was a mother who had been reported missing in 2014, according to a report by Local 10.
Belaya left a store where she had been shopping, but she never returned home.
Over the years, various search teams have attempted to locate the woman, but they faced the challenge of exploring more than 500 bodies of water in the vicinity of her home, without any results.
However, Sunshine State Sonar, alerted about the case this summer, initiated a new search that successfully concluded after examining 33 bodies of water.
"We searched 33 bodies of water before finding her. I thought this would be one of those cases where we would have to search four or five hundred bodies of water to locate her," remarked Mike Sullivan, founder of Sunshine State Sonar.
"It was surprising how quickly we were able to find her," he expressed.
This Thursday, authorities confirmed that the remains found inside the pickup truck belong to Belaya. However, the cause of death has not yet been determined and is still under investigation by the county's Coroner's Office.
This finding, although painful for the woman's family, brings closure to a chapter of uncertainty that lasted over ten years and finally provides answers to a case that had baffled authorities and the local community.
In 2020, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office solved the mysterious case known as the "Valentine Jane Doe Homicide," which involved the murder of an 18-year-old girl that occurred 30 years earlier.
