Cárdenas Hospital Faces 15 Days Without Elevator: Orderlies Transport Patients Up the Stairs

Cárdenas Hospital has been without an elevator for 15 days, forcing orderlies to carry patients up the stairs. The complaint on social media highlights physical risks and criticism of the healthcare system.

The hospital in Cárdenas, located in the province of Matanzas, is facing a serious situation that has sparked outrage among citizens.

For more than two weeks, the main elevator has been out of service, complicating the transfer of patients in a healthcare facility where mobility is essential for medical care.

The page of Facebook "Comunidad Cardenense" reported this Wednesday that, due to the elevator being out of service, the orderlies have had to take on the arduous task of carrying sick patients up and down the stairs.

"January 8, 2025: Cárdenas Hospital has been without a working elevator for 15 days; two orderlies are carrying patients up and down the stairs," the profile emphasized in its report.

This situation has been documented in a video shared on social media, showing two workers carrying patients up the narrow hospital stairs, exposing not only the patients but also the workers themselves to significant physical risks.

The complaint has sparked numerous comments from users on social media, who criticize the lack of solutions and the deterioration of basic services at one of the city's most important healthcare facilities.

Wilmia Reyes expressed: "What a lack of respect and consideration that there can't even be the slightest amount for those patients in hospitals! Many are in serious condition and shouldn't even be moved, but they don't care at all. It's horrible what is happening, especially in the hospitals; there aren't even any medications for the patients, and families have to find money from nowhere to pay for the medicines that could save their lives, and many times they don't even succeed because everything is lacking."

“Each day we are getting worse, without medications and soon without stretcher bearers, because honestly, no one can withstand this. Let’s see when they will provide a solution to the problem; they have seen that they can treat them this way and now the resolution is taking a long time. We are still talking about medical power, which is a lack of respect. Where are the relevant authorities who do not see this and provide a solution?” emphasized Yaniris Pérez.

For his part, Ramón Gómez emphasized: “It is inconceivable that there are still people who have the cynicism to defend this. There is no shame, much less dignity, because dignity should always be carried in everything we do and defend, but to defend something worth defending, not the garbage imposed on us so others can thrive on the suffering of others.”

Noelvis Villa expressed his frustration because he experienced that issue firsthand: “I went through this with my dad when he was in critical condition for surgery, and they were installing the new elevator while the stairs were in disrepair. That was years ago, and we are still in the same situation, or worse.”

Typically, the relatives of patients use social media to report the countless issues facing public health in Cuba, which, amid a deep economic crisis, still claims to be one of the best in the world.

Recently, a video exposing the precarious conditions of the Military Hospital in Marianao, Havana, has provoked outrage on social media.

In the images, a Cuban documents the lack of hygiene and extreme deterioration in critical areas of the medical center, including the operating rooms.
