José Alberto Riverón, manager at the restaurant El Jardín de los Milagros in Havana, has shared with his Facebook followers and CiberCuba a photo of the alleged thief identified after stealing a phone at a hamburger joint in Nuevo Vedado, who has also caused trouble at his establishment and at a kiosk located on the 100 bridge in the capital.
The person identified by several victims is a middle-aged white man who uses the same modus operandi of approaching to consume at a local establishment, and as soon as the clerk is distracted, he steals their phone. This has been recorded at least twice on security cameras installed in the stores or cafes where he has operated.
"Please keep sharing. This man is dedicated to this. Several people have written to us. They have experienced the same thing with the same man today at the restaurant El Jardín de los Milagros. He also approached a girl at a kiosk on Puente de 100 today. Last Wednesday, he targeted a girl at a piñata shop on 118 and 51. Help share this to track down this man so he doesn’t continue stealing openly," wrote Riverón.
The first time the phone thief in Havana was reported was this Wednesday, January 16, when a security camera in a café in Havana recorded a man stealing a cellphone by taking advantage of the employee's momentary distraction. The report was shared on Facebook in an effort to identify the thief.
Taking advantage of the fact that the worker was looking for a drink in the fridge, the thief reached part of his torso and an arm through the window, quickly grabbed the cell phone, and slipped it into his pocket before the worker turned around. Then, he paid for his drink and left calmly.
He only needed one minute and 20 seconds to commit the robbery, which was captured in its entirety by the security camera of the hamburger joint.
Now the thief has a face, and the victims of his thefts are asking for the image of the wrongdoer to be shared so that they can recover their phones if the police decide to take action.
