The incident involved a mass transit vehicle and was caused by a tire explosion, according to authorities.
The tire explosion caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which ended up crashing into a tree located beside the road. Lieutenant Naya Aranda Díaz from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) confirmed this information to the state-run media Escambray.
The victims, coming from the provinces of Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos, were transferred to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus. According to the director of the healthcare facility, Dr. Aliosky Polo Santana, the injured individuals present multiple traumas, although none of them are in life-threatening condition.
The hospital activated emergency protocols and is in constant communication with the families of the injured, ensuring proper medical care and monitoring of their recovery, the official information stated.
This incident adds to a series of similar accidents that have occurred in Cuba in recent months, where factors such as the deterioration of roads and the poor technical condition of vehicles tend to significantly contribute to these tragedies.
In April 2024, a bus from the Provincial Transport Company of Havana , which caused it to veer off the road in Alturas de Boca Ciega. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported in this incident.
In February 2024, a truck used for passenger transport in Ciego de Ávila suffered an accident that may have been related to the poor condition of its tires. Images of the incident showed one of the truck's wheels without its tire, leaving only the bare rim, suggesting a potential blowout as the cause of the accident.
These events highlight the urgent need to improve the maintenance of public transportation vehicles in Cuba, as well as to ensure the quality of the tires used, in order to prevent accidents that could endanger the lives of passengers and drivers.
