The Cuban regime, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) and the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR), announced the organization of a summer camp aimed at the children of Cubans living abroad.
The initiative was presented by the Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García Granda, during a meeting with travel agents in Madrid, Spain, as part of the city's Tourism Fair (FITUR), the largest of its kind in Europe.
The event, held at the Cuban Embassy in Madrid, featured the participation of 21 travel agencies operating in Spain, specified the Spanish portal TTC.
During the meeting, it was revealed that over 11,000 tourists arrived on the island from Spain through these entities, which accounts for 18% of the total visitors from that country up to December of last year.
García Granda explained that the summer camp aims to strengthen the ties of the Cuban community abroad with their country of origin, offering tourism and cultural experiences in various attractions on the island.
Additionally, it was announced that the possibility of organizing family maritime excursions is being considered as part of the tourism offerings for Cubans living abroad.
The Cuban tourism sector is facing a serious crisis due to various factors, such as a lack of infrastructure, shortages of basic supplies, and a damaged international image due to the internal economic crisis, as acknowledged by García Granda himself last December.
According to reports from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), the number of visitors continues to decline, which has compelled the government to intensify the promotion of the island as a tourist destination. Despite official efforts, the arrival of tourists remains well below expectations.
Despite the regime's efforts to promote the island as an attractive destination, the reality shows that tourism in Cuba continues to decline.
The lack of resources, instability in basic services, and difficulties in ensuring a quality supply continue to affect the industry. According to recent data, 2024 proved to be another bad year for the sector, which has forced authorities to seek strategies such as organizing events and creating specific incentives for international tourists and Cubans residing abroad.
Juan Carlos García Granda and his role in the Cuban regime
García Granda has been a key figure in the regime's strategy to promote tourism as a source of income amid the economic crisis facing the island. Under his leadership, costly international events such as the International Tourism Fair, organized by the Gaviota group, a company controlled by the Cuban military, have been promoted.
