A new act of violence has shaken social media in Cuba following reports about the murder of a 21-year-old young man, who was allegedly attacked with a knife as he was leaving work, resulting in his death.
According to a post from the Facebook group ‘Crímenes y desaparecidos en Cuba,’ a young man identified as Yoandri Giménez fell victim to an attacker who reportedly stabbed him to steal his mobile phone.
The tragic incident is reported to have occurred on Franco Street, at the corner of Benjumeda, in the municipality of Centro Habana. According to the administrator of the mentioned group, Giménez was intercepted by two individuals and sustained several fatal stab wounds to the groin and neck, as well as defensive wounds on his arms.
Despite having managed to call for help, Giménez reportedly passed away shortly afterward at the Calixto García Hospital. As of the time of writing this note, neither the authorities nor the official media have commented on this information published on social networks.
In the comments on the post, a user identified as Edurne Calderón noted that the young man lived in her neighborhood, known as "La Victoria" in the municipality, and sent her condolences to his family.
This unfortunate incident adds to a troubling wave of violence in Cuba, where thefts and assaults with knives have increased in recent months. In the same area of Centro Habana, a bakery teacher from "La Colosal" was also reported to have been attacked at 5:00 a.m., according to the same publication.
The case of Yoandri Giménez would not be an isolated incident. Throughout 2024, multiple murders and violent robberies have been reported in the country.
Among the most recent incidents, the murder of a man in Pinar del Río for his electric bicycle and cellphone and that of a 30-year-old Cuban who was killed in Havana for his mobile phone.
These incidents include a case of a man who was captured by several people and handed over to the police after stealing a mobile phone from an elderly woman in Havana, and the murder of a young man in Guantánamo over the theft of his mobile phone in December 2023.
In previous months, authorities reported on the arrest of a cellphone thief who used scissors to threaten his victims and rob them in crowded areas of the capital.
Cases of cell phone theft in commercial establishments have also been reported, such as in cafés, where surveillance cameras have caught the thieves in the act.
Despite authorities claiming that crime has decreased, the perception of insecurity among citizens has been rising. Security cameras have recently captured thefts in public spaces such as cafeterias, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The Cuban government has stated on several occasions that insecurity has not increased, arguing that the perception of violence is fueled by social media posts. However, citizens continue to report incidents of violence in different provinces of the country.
