The Cuban musician José Alberto Himely Torriente, founder of the Moncada group, passed away this Saturday in Havana at the age of 77 due to undisclosed causes.
According to the Cuban Institute of Music, Himely recently served as the percussionist for the group, with which he actively participated in significant cultural processes.
Although he had a degree in Economics, he dedicated himself professionally to music.
As a member of Moncada, he participated in the recording of their albums and traveled on numerous national and international tours.
"May your congas resonate forever, dear José Alberto Himely, greetings to Gordo Trujillo," expressed the singer-songwriter Frank Delgado on Facebook.
Himely Torriente was part of Moncada for 52 years, an organization established in 1972 within the Nueva Trova Movement, well-known for its support of the Cuban government.
The renowned musician was always seen behind his congas, wearing his distinctive hat, in a discreet spot on stage, an iconic image of the group.
Photos from last year shared on the Internet show that he was still active.
The note from the Cuban Institute of Music adds that he had been a Communist Party member since a young age and describes him as "a key activist within our musicians' organization."
"Cuban typical. Always a friend, ready for duty and joy. We still hear their drums resounding throughout Cuba," adds the post.
By decision of his family, his body will be cremated.
