The tragic traffic accident that occurred early this Sunday in the locality of Castillito, in the municipality of Mayarí, province of Holguín, has resulted in a total of six fatalities, including a 12-year-old child.

Three of the six deceased were residents of the United States who were visiting Cuba.

The accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on January 26 when a rental car traveling from the city of Holguín to Moa, with six occupants, lost control while crossing the Castillito bridge and crashed into a large metal pipe.

Images published by activist Irma Broek showed that the vehicle overturned.

The five initial fatalities were identified as:

Yancarlos Jiménez Carmenate, a 12-year-old boy residing in the United States.

Daniuska Carmenate Galván, 43 years old, residing in the United States.

Adriel Jiménez Pelegrín, 37 years old, resident in the United States.

Rachel Pelegrín González, 77 years old, resident of Las Coloradas, municipality of Moa.

Yaddelis Pérez Osorio, 37 years old, resident of Las Coloradas, municipality of Moa.

In another traffic incident, also reported by Rodríguez Pupo, a vehicle belonging to the Moa port overturned after the driver veered off the road while trying to avoid a cyclist.

A dark January is unfolding on Cuba's roads.

However, according to data from the National Road Safety Commission, last year there were 7,507 traffic accidents, which is a 12% decrease compared to the reports from 2023 (8,556).

Furthermore, deaths decreased by 13% (634), and the number of injuries was 6,613, a 4% reduction compared to the incidents that occurred the previous year.

Authorities insist that the main causes are driver violations, followed by the poor condition of the roads due to lack of maintenance and the age of the vehicle fleet, which averages between 40 and 70 years.
