The Republican congressman from Florida, Carlos A. Giménez, issued a stern warning to the Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel via his social media, after he prematurely stepped in to support the confrontation between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and American Donald Trump.
"Dictator appointed by decree, don't worry so much about Colombia, as what is coming to you is of biblical proportions," Giménez said in his message, predicting hard times for the Cuban regime, just as the new Trump administration and its Secretary of State, the Cuban-American Marco Rubio, have been announcing.
This statement comes in the context of increasing tensions between the United States and Cuba, especially following the recent decision by the Trump administration to reinstate the island on the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Giménez, alongside other Cuban-American congress members such as Mario Díaz-Balart and María Elvira Salazar, has been a staunch and consistent critic of the regime in Havana, which he has denounced on numerous occasions for its systematic violation of human rights.
Giménez, who has previously expressed his hope that a second term for Donald Trump could bring an end to communism in Cuba, warned Díaz-Canel that the "hardline" approach displayed towards Colombia will be just a mere reprimand compared to the foreign policy stance that the current Trump administration holds regarding Cuba.
Giménez's warning is part of a series of statements from Cuban-American politicians who seek to increase pressure on the Cuban regime. These actions reflect an increasingly firm stance from certain sectors of the U.S. government toward Cuba, in an effort to promote significant changes on the island.
