On the night of February 2, 2025, at 11:51 p.m., a magnitude 3.1 earthquake was recorded in the city of Guantánamo, according to the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS). Despite its low intensity, some residents reported feeling it.
According to the protocols established by the National Seismological Service and Civil Defense, the event was not officially classified as perceptible, as there were not enough reports received at the central station. This regulation is based on technical criteria aimed at distinguishing between events that have an impact on the population and those that are of low perceptibility.
"Last night, at 11:51 PM, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake was recorded, which was perceptible to some individuals in the city of Guantánamo. Due to the low perceptibility of this quake and the fact that it was not reported to the central station, it was not officially recognized as perceptible. This is established in the protocols with the National Civil Defense," indicated in his social networks Enrique Diego Arango Arias, Head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at CENAIS.
CENAIS reminded that monitoring of seismic activity in Cuba is ongoing and that the eastern region of the country is the most seismically active, experiencing frequent low to moderate intensity tremors. In its latest report, the institution detailed that several aftershocks have been recorded over the past month in areas such as Santiago de Cuba, Pilón-Chivirico, and Cabo Cruz, although without significant consequences.
Authorities urged the public to stay informed through official channels and reiterated the importance of reporting any perceptible seismic events, which helps to enhance alert and monitoring systems.

Seismic activity continues in eastern Cuba
The eastern region of Cuba, particularly the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo, has experienced notable seismic activity in recent months.
On December 23, 2024, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook the eastern part of the country, being felt in several provinces and causing minor damage in some areas.
Previously, on November 10, 2024, two strong tremors were recorded with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7, with epicenters near the municipality of Pilón in Granma province.
Estos eventos they caused significant damage to infrastructures de las provincias de Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba y Guantánamo, siendo Pilón una de las zonas más afectadas.
Since those events, CENAIS has reported thousands of aftershocks in the region. For example, by November 12, 2024, 1,799 aftershocks had been recorded following the strong earthquakes that occurred on November 10.
More recently, on January 9, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 was reported southeast of Caimanera, in the province of Guantánamo. Although there were no reported material damages or injuries, this event raised concern among some residents of the area.
CENAIS continues to monitor seismic activity in eastern Cuba and urges the public to stay informed through official channels, as well as to report any perceptible seismic events to enhance alert and response systems.
