The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity in El Cobre, in collaboration with the Emmaus Brotherhood of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba, has launched a new assistance project to provide human and spiritual support to women undergoing cancer treatments.
The program, called "Embrace Life," was presented last Sunday, coinciding with the celebration of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple, reported the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba on its Facebook profile.
During the Sunday mass at the Sanctuary, the project received its first blessing, marking the beginning of an initiative aimed at providing fraternal support to women during one of life's most challenging trials.
The initiative arises from the experience of 16 women who have faced cancer and have decided to turn their testimony into a beacon of hope for others.
With this purpose, they aim to share their experiences of faith, presenting the risen and merciful Christ as a source of strength amid suffering. For now, the project will focus on Santiago de Cuba and will be based at the house of the Virgin in El Cobre.
The Archdiocese has invited the community to join and promote this act of solidarity, which is part of other initiatives from the Church to support the most vulnerable.
Women with this illness need both material support and spiritual companionship, which they deeply value.
In Cuba, cancer patients face multiple shortages, being forced to turn to social media and activists to obtain the resources and support they need.
An example is the solidarity campaign that is currently seeking urgent help to raise the necessary funds for the Cuban boy Damir Ortiz Ramírez, who is 10 years old and has a tumor in one eye that puts his life at risk, and needs to travel for treatment in the United States.
The open fundraising campaign on the platform GoFundMe aims to give “a chance at life” to the child, who has been diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and has a plexiform neurofibroma in the right eye, treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in addition to leukemia currently under investigation, as explained by the activist Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia, who is organizing the aid request.
In last December, the activists also celebrated that the campaign on GoFundMe to save the life of Lía Isabel García Torres, a five-year-old girl who is fighting a tough battle against leukemia, had raised nearly $16,000 to cover accommodation and medical treatment costs in the United States.
