Two people die in Guanabacoa after accidentally ingesting nitrite salt

On the afternoon of this Saturday, February 15, three members of the same family arrived at the Andrés Ortiz Polyclinic in the capital municipality of Guanabacoa, exhibiting symptoms of poisoning. Shortly after their admission, two of them passed away due to the severity of their health condition.

In a statement published by the General Directorate of Health of Havana, the victims were identified as Doraima García Moroña, 25 years old, and Nashlyn Salet Hernández García, five.

According to information provided by a third affected family member, the poisoning was reportedly caused by the consumption of food prepared with saltpeter, which was mistakenly used instead of regular salt.

This product was purchased on Compostela Street, in the municipality of Old Havana, which is currently under investigation.

They assured that two other family members are receiving medical attention in hospital institutions in Havana.

They also noted that authorities from the Communist Party, the Government, and the Health Directorate visited the health center where the patients were treated.

The Ministry of the Interior has launched an investigation to clarify the causes of the incident and determine responsibilities.
