A Cuban climbs the ETECSA tower in Cienfuegos

The incident sparked a quick gathering of neighbors, who flocked to the scene and began recording what was happening.

A Cuban climbed to the top of a telecommunications tower belonging to ETECSA in the city of Cienfuegos, allegedly as a form of protest against the constant blackouts affecting the Reina neighborhood community.

The incident quickly drew a crowd of neighbors who gathered at the scene and started recording the event.

The man -identified as Tomás Chacón- threatened to jump if they tried to forcefully bring him down, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

In light of the tense situation, firefighters and police arrived on the scene and began negotiations with the protester.

After several minutes of dialogue, the firefighters managed to convince Chacón to come down from the tower without the need for forced intervention.

Images published on social media by Cántalo TV showed the moment when the man finally came down from the tower, urged by a firefighter who had climbed part of the way to look for him.

As of the closing of this note, no further details about the incident have emerged.

It is not the first time a similar incident has occurred in Cienfuegos, in December 2022, another Cuban climbed a tower of ETECSA, in that case in the municipality of Cruces, also in protest against the ongoing and severe blackouts.

In that case, the man, identified as Liván El Burro, climbed the ETECSA tower and began shouting phrases like "Down with communism" and "I want to go to the Yuma," and threatening to commit suicide if they did not restore the electricity.
