The Electric Union (UNE) announced the commencement of maintenance work on the generator of Unit 1 at the "Lidio Ramón Pérez" thermal power plant (Felton), located in Holguín.

The intervention comes at a critical time for the national electrical system, which is facing a considerable deficit in energy generation, several thermal power units out of service and extended blackouts across the country.

According to UNE's report on its social media, the work began after the cooling process of the turbine was completed.

A team made up of specialized engineers and mechanics, along with technicians from the thermoelectric plant, are working on uncovering the upper casing of the generator to assess the condition of the internal components and proceed with the necessary repairs.

Felton, one of the main power generation plants in Cuba, has experienced ongoing breakdowns in recent years.

On February 7, the unit was successfully reconnected to the National Electric System (SEN) after several repair attempts. However, on February 11, it went out of service again, further worsening the energy crisis affecting the island.

Days later, on February 12, official sources confirmed the severity of the issues at the thermoelectric plant, suggesting that difficulties in electricity generation could persist for an indefinite period.

This new repair takes place in the context of widespread blackouts across the country, which have caused discomfort among the population and complications in various sectors of the economy. In the week of February 17, the UNE warned that power outages will continue due to a lack of generation capacity.

Despite the start of work in Felton, the authorities have not specified a date for the unit's reintegration into the SEN. Meanwhile, Cubans continue to face one of the worst energy crises in recent years, with blackouts that can exceed 10 hours a day in several provinces across the country.
