The stellar Cuban baseball player Yulieski Gurriel signed a deal with the San Diego Padres for the 2025 season within the Major League Baseball system (MLB).

According to journalist Francys Romero, at 40 years old, the veteran player has a strong chance of making the Opening Day roster, in what would be a new opportunity in his (already) distinguished career in the “Big Show”.

Romero announced the news on his social media, while later Jon Heyman of the New York Post expanded on the details of the contract, stating that the agreement is for 1.25 million dollars if he performs in the Major Leagues, with the potential to earn up to an additional million in incentives. Moreover, the deal includes an invitation to the Padres' training camp.

Despite four decades of existence, "Yuli" continues to compete at the highest level, even after a 2024 season in which he spent most of his time in Triple-A with the Atlanta Braves.

In 75 games with the Atlanta affiliate, he posted an offensive line of .292/.378/.863 with 18 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 48 RBIs, and 38 runs scored. Although he never played for the Braves in MLB, his performance opened the door for an unexpected return with the Kansas City Royals, where he secured a starting position and ended up playing in the postseason before his team was eliminated by the New York Yankees.

Gurriel, who made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros in 2016, has been one of the leading Cuban figures in MLB despite entering the league at over 30 years old.

In nine seasons, he has worn the uniforms of Houston, Miami Marlins, Kansas City, and now San Diego. He has a batting average of .280, with 952 hits, 225 doubles, eight triples, 98 home runs, 468 runs batted in, and 439 runs scored in a total of 927 games, according to the statistics from ESPN.

Moreover, his impact on the league has been significant, after being crowned World Series champion with the Astros in 2017 and 2022, as well as winning a batting title and a Gold Glove.

Now, with the Padres, Gurriel will seek to extend his legacy and demonstrate that his talent remains relevant in the demanding Major League Baseball.
