Miracle in Granma: Premature twin baby weighing 1,100 grams overcomes challenges and is discharged from the hospital

A premature baby weighing 1,100 grams survives after 94 days in a hospital in Granma.

A premature twin baby, born weighing only 1,100 grams, has managed to survive after 94 days in the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial Hospital in Bayamo, Granma.

According to a report from the official telecenter CNC TV, the mother of the baby was admitted in an emergency on November 10, just hours after strong earthquakes shook the region, at only 28 weeks of gestation.

The delivery could not take place in the designated room on the fourth floor, so the doctors improvised an area in the maternity classroom. Amid the tension, the woman gave birth to two girls, of which only one survived.

The little girl Eva, as her parents named her, suffered from respiratory complications and an intracranial hemorrhage, which required prolonged ventilation.

However, the hospital had to share ventilators for both twins due to a shortage of equipment.

Its favorable evolution was achieved thanks to the efforts of the medical staff, although the lack of resources affecting Cuban hospitals became evident.

The testimony of the mother who spent 94 days in the hospital reflects her gratitude for the life of her daughter.

“Today I am very happy, despite having spent 94 days in this institution, today I leave with my girl well”, she expressed.

This case adds to others such as that of , who underwent surgery just six hours after birth in Villa Clara due to a congenital brain malformation. The success of the surgery allowed him to be discharged and return home with his family.

Another success story was that of the first triplets born in Villa Clara, who, after being hospitalized for just over a month and a half, were discharged after reaching the required weight.

It also happened with a baby born at 29 weeks of gestation, who along with their mother, survived a complicated delivery at the General Hospital of the municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
