Baby Evelyn Vitória Liy Garcés, the result of the love between a couple of Cubans newly arrived in Brazil, was the first person born in 2025 in the Greater ABC region of São Paulo state.
The daughter of the Cuban couple Zulienny Liy Garcés, 20, and Rider Soler Revilla, 22, who arrived in Brazil just three months ago, was born naturally at 1:21 AM on Wednesday, January 1, at the Women's Hospital of Santo André.
The girl weighed 3,178 grams and measured 48 centimeters at birth, reported Diário Do Grande ABC.
“She was scheduled to be born today (the 1st), according to the doctor's calculations based on the gestation period. Zulienny started feeling contractions yesterday (the 31st) in the morning. At 11 PM, we had to go to the maternity ward, and we thought she would be born on the 31st, but she ended up arriving on the 1st as planned,” Revilla told the newspaper.
He and his wife left Cuba in search of opportunities and prosperity, like hundreds of thousands of others who have fled the island in the past three years, in the largest migration exodus in the country's history.
Upon arriving in the South American country, Revilla began working at a bakery. The Cuban couple intends to continue their life in the city of Santo André, according to the Brazilian newspaper's report.
Zulienny, like the other first-time mothers, received a kit from the public healthcare system called “Mãe Andreense,” which includes a bag with diapers, clothes for the newborn, soap, a towel, and a changing pad, among other items.
"Another gift of motherhood is a placenta stamp, which transfers the image of the pregnancy symbol onto paper, immortalizing the moment of birth," said Gisele Minosso Baptista, a nurse at the Hospital de la Mulher de Santo André, in an interview with the newspaper.
The second birth of the new year in the public network of Greater ABC was recorded around 4:30 AM at the Doutor Radamés Nardini Clinics Hospital in Mauá. The newborns were two male twins.
In recent years, amid the severe economic and social crisis in Cuba, Brazil has become an appealing destination for thousands of Cuban immigrants seeking better opportunities outside their homeland.
As of November 2024, over 19,700 Cubans arrived in the South American country, according to data from DataMigra and the International Migration Observatory, published in Folha de São Paulo.
