The baby Evelyn Vitória Liy Garcés, the result of the love between a couple of Cubans recently arrived in Brazil, was the first person born in 2025 in the Gran ABC region, in the state of São Paulo.
The daughter of the Cuban couple formed by Zulienny Liy Garcés, 20 years old, and Rider Soler Revilla, 22, who arrived in Brazil just three months ago, was born naturally at 1:21 AM on Wednesday, January 1st, at the Hospital de la Mulher de Santo André.
The girl weighed 3,178 grams and measured 48 centimeters at birth, reported Diário Do Grande ABC.
“She was scheduled to be born today (the 1st), according to the doctor's calculations based on the gestation period. Zulienny started feeling contractions yesterday (the 31st) in the morning. At 11 PM, we had to come to the maternity ward, and we thought she would be born on the 31st, but she ended up being born on the 1st as expected,” Revilla told the newspaper.
He and his wife left Cuba in search of opportunities and prosperity, like hundreds of thousands of people who have left the island in the last three years, in the largest migratory exodus in the country's history.
After arriving in the South American country, Revilla began working in a bakery. The Cuban couple intends to continue their life in the city of Santo André, according to a report from the Brazilian newspaper.
Zulienny, like the other first-time mothers, received from the public healthcare system a kit called "Mãe Andreense," which includes a bag with diapers, clothing for the newborn, soap, a towel, and a changing mat, among other items.
"Another gift of maternity is a placenta stamp, which transfers the image of the pregnancy symbol onto paper, immortalizing the moment of birth," commented Gisele Minosso Baptista, a nurse at the Women's Hospital of Santo André, to the newspaper.
The second birth of the new year in the public network of Greater ABC occurred around 4:30 am at the Doutor Radamés Nardini Clinics Hospital in Mauá. The newborns were two male twins.
During the last few years, amid the severe economic and social crisis affecting Cuba, Brazil has become an attractive destination for thousands of Cuban immigrants seeking better opportunities outside their home country.
By November 2024, over 19,700 Cubans arrived in the South American country, according to data from DataMigra and the International Migration Observatory, published in Folha de São Paulo.
