The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has proposed a new measure that assigns the responsibility of enforcing immigration laws in the state to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS).

To achieve this goal, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the Florida State Guard reached an agreement to be trained and certified by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in order to carry out tasks related to the enforcement of the new immigration laws, reported the network Univisión.

"By allowing our state agents and law enforcement officers to be trained and certified by ICE, Florida will now have more personnel responsible for law enforcement and assisting federal partners. This means that deportations can be carried out more efficiently, making our communities safer as illegal foreigners are removed," said DeSantis.

The new guidelines established grant state authorities and the Florida State Guard the power to:

  • Interrogate anyone suspected of being a foreigner about their immigration status and, if found to be in violation of immigration laws, proceed with their detention and processing.
  • Arrest and detain any foreigner attempting to illegally enter the United States, whether through ports of entry or in waters near Florida.
  • To hand over detained immigrants to immigration authorities without unnecessary delays for their processing.
  • Execute arrests for serious offenses related to federal immigration laws.
  • Issue and enforce arrest warrants for immigration violations.
  • Taking tests and administering oaths during the documentation and processing of immigrants, including fingerprints, photographs, and interviews.

This new agreement is part of a series of measures implemented by DeSantis to strengthen immigration policy in Florida.

Recently announced that the state Highway Patrol will take on new responsibilities regarding immigration, strengthening the enforcement of immigration laws at checkpoints.

The local official indicated that the Highway Patrol officers will collaborate with federal and state immigration authorities to identify and detain individuals who are in the country illegally.

Similarly, the Republican politician enacted regulations to require state and local participation in the enforcement of federal immigration law, criminalize illegal entry into Florida, and put an end to the capture and release of foreign criminals.

Since January, DeSantis has announced his action plan to combat illegal immigration in the state, in coordination with Trump's measures.
