A study by the platform RentHop has revealed that New York and Miami are the most expensive cities for singles in the United States, while the more affordable options can be found in the Midwest and the South of the country.

The research compares the average cost of a studio apartment with the average income of single individuals in the 50 most populated cities in the United States.

The RentHop report highlights the importance of considering factors such as average income, housing costs, and urban regulation before deciding which city to settle in as a single person.

New York is ranked as the most expensive city for singles, with an average rent of $3,375, which accounts for 68% of their income ($59,947 annually).

Miami ranks second, with nearly 54% of the average annual income allocated to rent, with an average monthly rent of $2,050.

Out of the five least affordable cities for renters in the United States, Miami saw the highest rent increase in recent months.

The average rent for a studio in Miami has increased by 3.22% since last year, and singles can expect to spend 53.53% of their income on rent.

They are followed by Detroit (37.4%), Boston (36.5%), and Los Angeles (35.8%).

The report also highlights that in cities like New York, the gender income gap affects housing affordability.

Single women in New York must allocate 76.5% of their salary to rent a studio, while men spend 57.9%.

In El Paso, Texas, this gap is even more pronounced: women must spend 35% of their salary on rent, compared to 19% for men.

The most affordable options for singles in the United States

The city of Wichita, in Kansas, tops the list as the most affordable city for singles, with an average rent of $590, which represents just 18% of the average income for a single person ($39,336).

Next are Columbus, Ohio, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the rent for a studio apartment is approximately 21% of the average salary.

Seattle, despite its high cost of living, is also among the most affordable cities due to its high incomes.

With an average rent of $1,495 and an average salary of $85,653, singles allocate around 21% of their income to housing.

In Colorado Springs, where rent has risen to $980, the proportion of income allocated to housing is 21.5%.

These cities offer greater financial freedom to singles, as rental costs account for less than 25% of their income.

Additionally, the availability of land for construction and flexible regulations in these regions allow for keeping real estate prices affordable.

In the Midwest and the South, the availability of land and more flexible regulations favor the construction of affordable housing.
