A young motorcyclist died and another was injured on Monday after colliding with a Transtur bus in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, in the province of Holguín.
The accident occurred precisely "at the intersection that connects the road to Guantánamo and the bridge to the locality of Jobo in Sagua de Tánamo," according to the pro-government Facebook profile Soldado Tanameño, which shared images of the accident scene.
The same source reported that the motorcycle was coming from the bridge and that "it apparently lost control at high speed" and hit the bus.
In the shared photos, it can be seen that at least one of the passengers in the light vehicle was wearing an equestrian helmet, like those commonly used by motorcyclists on the island, but which provide minimal protection and are strongly discouraged for use while riding motorcycles.
One of the young men died instantly, and the other was taken to "Juan Paz Camejo" Hospital.
A resident of Sagua de Tánamo identified the deceased young man as "Abraham", while another source indicated that the two young individuals involved in the incident were from the same municipality, "one from San Miguel and the other from La Plazuela."
A couple of neighbors from the area lamented the lack of proper signage in the vicinity of the accident.
"I live at the intersection of Grave de Peralta Street and José A. Saco; there has always been a STOP sign, but it disappeared some time ago. It's concerning how cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles violate this space, putting drivers and pedestrians at risk. The authorities need to take action to prevent accidents that cause so much harm to people," wrote a commenter.
"How long will so many violations be allowed? The signs at that intersection have disappeared (STOP and YIELD). There needs to be control and enforcement from the competent authorities," confirmed a second internet user.
As of the time of this report, there are no further details about the incident.
Accidents in Cuba have shown no signs of relief since the year began.
Recently, a mass traffic accident occurred following the collision of two buses at the entrance of the city of Las Tunas, resulting in a total of 11 injured people, three of whom are in critical condition. Among the injured was a minor, as reported by official sources.
The government blames drivers for most accidents in Cuba
In January, the Cuban government held drivers accountable as the main cause of traffic accidents in 2024, according to a report from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).
The main violations were lack of attention while driving, disregard for the right of way, and speeding.
Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández reported a 12% decrease in accidents compared to 2023, with 7,507 incidents recorded, 634 fatalities (13% less), and 6,613 injuries (4% less).
Speeding remains dangerous, with at least one injury for every accident and one fatality for every seven incidents.
About 665 drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incidents, resulting in the suspension of 1,204 licenses and the cancellation of 20 due to repeat offenses. The hitting of pedestrians continues to be the third leading cause of death on the roads.
Authorities also warned about the increase in accidents involving motorcycles, scooters, cycle-taxis, and animal-drawn vehicles.
Although Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia acknowledged the poor condition of the roads, he insisted that human error is the main cause of accidents.
