The government blames drivers for the majority of accidents in Cuba

In January, the Cuban government held drivers responsible as the main cause of traffic accidents in 2024, according to a report from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).

The main infractions were lack of attention while driving, failure to yield the right of way, and speeding.

Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández reported a 12% decrease in accidents compared to 2023, with a total of 7,507 incidents recorded, 634 fatalities (13% less), and 6,613 injuries (4% less).

Speeding remains dangerous, with at least one injury for every accident and one fatality for every seven incidents.

About 665 drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incidents, resulting in the suspension of 1,204 licenses and the cancellation of 20 due to recidivism. The runover of pedestrians continues to be the third leading cause of death on the roads.

Authorities also warned about the rise in accidents involving motorcycles, mopeds, bike taxis, and animal-drawn vehicles.

Although Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia acknowledged the poor condition of the roads, he insisted that human errors are the main cause of accidents.
