The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, on Zanja Street, near the 12-story building, in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of the municipality of Havana, according to the description of the video shared on social media.
"Today it was the partner, tomorrow it could be you or someone in your close circle. Remember that nothing is concealed between heaven and earth," wrote the person who reported the incident.
Surveillance camera footage captured the moment when two men parked a car next to the sidewalk and got out to buy something at one of the nearby cafes, while an individual approached the vehicle, carefully peered inside, and pretended to walk away.
The man takes a few steps, makes sure that no one is watching him, and returns to the car. In a matter of seconds, with astonishing speed, he slips through the open window, grabs the phone, turns around, and crosses the street.
The driver of the vehicle apparently hears a noise, turns around, and sees the thief walking away. Then, he and the other occupant of the car check to see what the criminal took, but it was already too late to try to pursue him and recover the phone.
As of the time this note was published, the thief had not been identified, but the author of the post stated in the comments that they were close to locating him. One user mentioned that she recognized the individual by his clothing and claimed that, along with an accomplice, he was in front of her house in the same area, trying to steal a neighbor's car.
The video of the shocking express robbery highlights the growing insecurity in the country, where criminals take advantage of any opportunity or lapse of attention from people to steal their belongings; and in many cases, they use violence to achieve their aims.
Recently, there have been recordings of robberies and violent armed assaults in various locations across the country, incidents that demonstrate the criminal escalation that Cuba has been experiencing for years.
