Despite the general blackout that has left over 90% of the country without electricity, the Cuban Aviation Corporation S.A. has assured that the international airports on the island are continuing to operate normally.
According to the entity, during the early hours of this Saturday, a Copa Airlines flight was handled smoothly at the "José Martí" International Airport in Havana, and the operation of all the country's air terminals is guaranteed.
"At the 'José Martí' International Airport in Havana, the scheduled flight of Copa Airlines was handled early this morning. All international airports in the country have the necessary conditions in place to provide services normally," stated the Corporation on its .
The statement comes amid uncertainty, following the announcement from the Electric Union (UNE) that the recovery of the National Electric System (SEN) is ongoing through the implementation of "microsystems" in 12 provinces, with no defined timeline for the complete restoration of service yet.
The energy collapse has severely affected the Cuban population, with 94% of citizens reporting in a survey by CiberCuba that they are still without electricity. The lack of energy has impacted water supply, telecommunications, and food preservation, creating a growing atmosphere of discontent in the country.
Despite the crisis, airport authorities assure that they have the necessary backup systems in place to maintain operations and ensure the continuity of scheduled flights. However, they have not provided details on how long they will be able to sustain these conditions amid an energy crisis without an immediate solution.
Cuban authorities have promised to update the situation regarding the electrical service as the recovery process progresses, while the population continues to wait for a definitive solution to the fourth general blackout experienced on the island in less than six months.
