Cuba is experiencing a nationwide blackout following the complete disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) that occurred this Friday, according to the Electric Union (UNE).

In the early hours of this Saturday, the state company announced that the recovery of the service is being carried out through "microsystems", a strategy that allows for the supply of energy to specific areas and vital centers while efforts are made to restore generation in the thermoelectric plants.

So far, 110 MW have been successfully supplied through these microsystems in 12 provinces of the country, stated on social media by the company led by Alfredo López Valdés. The UNE indicated that efforts are underway to progressively connect these isolated systems with the main generation plants, with the goal of restoring the stability of the SEN.

This new collapse of the national electricity system reminds us of similar events that occurred in recent months, such as the massive blackout reported in November 2024, when several provinces were left without electricity for days.

At that time, the government implemented the use of "microsystems" to expedite the recovery of services in hospitals, water pumping stations, and other essential sectors.

The energy crisis in Cuba has been a constant issue in recent years, with recurring failures in thermal power plants, a lack of fuel, and maintenance problems within the infrastructure. In October 2024, another widespread blackout affected a large part of the country due to the shutdown of several generating units that began with the outage of the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant in Matanzas.

The government has repeatedly assured that it is working on structural solutions for the electrical system; however, outages continue to affect the population. This time, the UNE has not specified when service will be restored nationwide, although the reconnection of microsystems with generation plants is expected to facilitate the process.

Authorities have promised to update the situation as the recovery of the SEN progresses, while Cubans face another day of uncertainty and difficulties due to a lack of electricity in much of the country.
