In the midst of one of the worst energy crises Cuba has faced in decades, the influencer Cinthya Medrano García, known as La Cintumbare, has sparked controversy by posting on social media a statement that has been perceived as a mockery of the difficult situation the Cuban population is enduring.
In a recent video shared on Instagram by user yaciel_magno, the young woman was seen celebrating with friends, enjoying a party in Havana, while holding a can of beer and mocking the energy crisis that was (and still is) affecting Cuba, saying: "There's no light in Cuba, but I have some!".
The video, created with a clear purpose of mockery and exhibitionism, was widely criticized by internet users who considered Medrano García's behavior an offense, as well as a complete lack of empathy towards the Cubans who suffered from the massive blackout that occurred on Friday, March 14 - the fourth in less than six months - which left millions of households without service for up to 48 hours.
This new episode adds to the list of controversies that have surrounded the influencer in recent months.
In contrast to the reality faced by most Cubans, La Cintumbare has been seen at high-profile social events. Recently, she was spotted at a party in Havana alongside Sandro Castro at his bar, just a week after her deportation from the United States.
This event was subject to criticism on social media, where many users felt that such displays of opulence and closeness with the grandson of Fidel Castro are a lack of respect towards those who are suffering the consequences of the economic and energy crisis in the country.
In recent days, she has been seen promoting a controversial business (an adult content platform) through which, she claims, she is making money in Cuba. Far from being affected by criticism, La Cintumbare has defended her lifestyle and her stay on the island with statements like being "the happiest deportee" and that she is "enjoying Havana."
While the Cuban people face constant blackouts and a severe economic crisis, the exhibitionism of La Cintumbare has been labeled by many as a mockery of the population's suffering.
Social media has reacted with strong criticism, urging to stop giving visibility and support to an influencer who openly mocks the prolonged blackouts that affect not only lighting but also essential services such as water supply and food preservation.
The attitude of public figures like La Cintumbare and Sandro Castro, who showcase luxurious lifestyles amid widespread adversity, has sparked a debate on the social responsibility of influencers and public personalities during times of crisis.
Many consider that these kinds of behaviors are insensitive and contribute to increasing the frustration and discontent of the population. Others point out that behaviors like that of the influencer highlight the deep inequalities and social tensions existing in the country.
