The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, denounced this Wednesday that Russia continues to attack the energy infrastructure of his country, despite the commitments made by Vladimir Putin during his recent conversation with Donald Trump.
In light of this situation, the Ukrainian leader announced that he will hold an urgent conversation with his American counterpart to demand explanations and press for assurances of compliance.
Russia intensifies bombardments against strategic infrastructures
Just hours after Putin and Trump discussed a 30-day truce to halt attacks on energy facilities, Ukraine experienced a new wave of bombings, according to reports from Kyiv Post.
In Slovyansk, in the Donetsk region, a Russian attack destroyed part of the power grid, leaving thousands of residents without service. In Kramatorsk, explosions in residential areas caused destruction and panic among the inhabitants.
In the early hours of March 19, Russian drones attacked the railway system in Dnipropetrovsk. Although rail traffic did not stop, temporary disruptions and damage to facilities were reported. The state company Ukrzaliznytsia reported that Russian troops launched a second attack while emergency teams were working in the area.
In the Sumy region, two hospitals were hit by Russian missiles. One of the attacks, recorded in the city of Krasnopil, forced the evacuation of patients and medical personnel. In the Bucha district of the Kyiv region, a drone injured a 60-year-old man and destroyed several homes.
Zelensky demands a control mechanism over Putin from Trump
From Helsinki, where he was received by the President of Finland, Zelensky warned that Russia continues to violate its promises and that the attacks have not ceased. "Putin promised to stop the bombings, but in just one night he launched 145 drones and six missiles against our cities and energy systems," the Ukrainian leader stated.
Zelensky also announced that he would hold a call with Trump to learn more details about his conversation with Putin and urge him to promote a real verification mechanism. “Putin's words are not enough,” stated the Ukrainian president, emphasizing the need for stronger international pressure.
Moscow responds with accusations against Ukraine
On its part, the Kremlin accused Ukraine of attacking an oil depot in the Russian region of Krasnodar, stating that this action threatens peace negotiations. The Russian spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, pointed out that Putin and Trump have shown interest in reducing military aid to Ukraine and continuing dialogue.
Despite the escalation of attacks, Trump's special envoy for negotiations with Russia stated that Putin remains committed to peace and that a definitive ceasefire could be reached within two weeks. However, the reality on the ground contradicts these statements, with a war that continues to take lives and impact millions of Ukrainians.
