The Miami-Dade County authorities and the Florida Forest Service (FFS) continue working to control the massive wildfire known as “344 Fire”, which has already scorched over 26,700 acres in the southern part of the county.

Although the fire has been active for more than eight days, on Monday the authorities reported that it is 80 percent contained, although isolated hotspots persist and monitoring continues to be constant, as stated by Local 10.

The fire, which is suspected to have been intentionally set, affected traffic for several days on the only two routes connecting the south of Miami-Dade with the north of Monroe County: U.S. Highway 1 and Card Sound Road. Both roads, which were subject to intermittent closures, have been reopened to traffic, as confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Despite the reopening of the roads, the authorities urge drivers to avoid the area, as the emergency response remains intense and includes the operation of trucks, tractors, bulldozers, three helicopters, and two fixed-wing aircraft.

Firefighters reported that they used fire retardant to protect nearby critical infrastructure, and the National Weather Service warned of strong winds and low humidity, conditions that could promote the resurgence of the fire.

For its part, the FFS and the Miami-Dade Fire Department (MDFR) issued key recommendations to prevent new fires, such as avoiding outdoor burning; securing trailer chains to prevent sparks; being extremely cautious when discarding cigarettes, and immediately reporting any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911.

For the moment, investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the fire, while emergency crews continue to work toward achieving total containment in the coming days.
