The Cuban regime organized a propaganda event in front of the home of José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), in the Altamira neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba.
According to the opposition member himself, teaching staff, school administrators, students, and members of the Communist Party were forced to participate in the mobilization organized by the authorities last Saturday to counteract the humanitarian activities carried out by the opposition organization.
“A communist act here in Altamira, just meters from our national headquarters. The Communist Party, through its political police, is repressing and organizing this show because they are disturbed that we are feeding and healing very needy people,” Ferrer stated in a video shared on social media.
The activist explained that the authorities brought workers and students from various centers to the site in order to create the appearance of popular support against the actions of UNPACU, which in recent weeks has resumed its community assistance efforts, especially in the distribution of food and medicine to vulnerable individuals.
In recent weeks, hundreds of people have gone to the headquarters of UNPACU seeking food, medicine, or basic assistance, which has provoked a strong reaction from the repressive apparatus. Ferrer has reported an increase in police surveillance, arbitrary detentions, and intimidation of neighbors and collaborators, with the aim of stifling the solidarity actions of the opposition group.
"They are not satisfied with repression; now they are also putting on a circus show," denounced the opposition leader, lamenting that the regime is trying to "compete" with civil initiatives without providing real solutions to the serious social situation the country is facing.
