At least three undocumented Cuban immigrants with criminal records were arrested in the Florida Keys during a joint operation by federal, state, and local agencies in the United States conducted last Friday, and they are awaiting deportation, authorities reported.
Agents from the U.S. Border Patrol at the Marathon station (Miami Sector), with the support of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the Key West Police Department, and the Florida Department of Corrections, arrested seven undocumented foreigners, "each with an extensive criminal history", noted a statement released this Monday on the official site of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Among the seven detainees are at least three illegal immigrants of Cuban nationality with criminal records due to previous convictions. One for elder abuse and the other two for drug trafficking: methamphetamine and oxycodone, respectively. Authorities have not disclosed the names of the arrested Cubans.
The statement did not specify whether there were other Cuban migrants among those detained, but it did mention a Guatemalan citizen with a prior conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury to another person.
The authorities stated that all the illegal foreign nationals arrested have been processed and transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), where they are currently being held pending their deportation from the United States.
The arrests are part of "a multi-agency initiative aimed at making the Florida Keys a safer place by removing dangerous criminals from local communities."
At the beginning of the month, the Border Patrol, ICE, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrested 10 illegal immigrants in the Florida Keys, at least two of whom were of Cuban origin, all of whom had previously been convicted as sex offenders.
"Illegal immigrant criminals will no longer hide in the shadows of bureaucracy. In the state of Florida, we have removed the barriers between local, state, and federal jurisdictions, coming together as law enforcement agents to safeguard our communities and protect our nation from illegal immigrant criminals," stated Jeffrey Dinise, Chief Patrol Agent of the Miami Sector of the Border Patrol.
"I am proud of the dedication of our Border Patrol agents and our partners in law enforcement, who are committed to public safety and our mission of border security," stated the official.
ICE and other agencies have intensified joint operations across all states in the U.S. to arrest undocumented immigrants with criminal records, as part of the drastic immigration policies implemented by the current administration of President Donald Trump.
In operations conducted in the first weeks of the month, ICE arrested 81 undocumented immigrants in Kentucky, including Cuban citizens.
